7 Places Not to Miss in Provence

After spending a week in Provence, I’ve come home completely smitten with this region of France. It seems to have it all — small hilltop villages, rolling vineyards, and some of the most incredible cuisine around. There’s much to see, as the region expands from Nimes to Nice, and Marseille to Haute Provence.

During the week, we took small trips each day and these were my 7 not to miss in Provence.

1. Cassis
This small town along the Mediterranean is one of those gems that you can’t miss while visiting Provence. The small streets wind to the water, where coves with turquoise waters are perfect for cooling off. I loved taking a boat trip to see the Calanques, a must do!

2. Gordes
If there was one hilltop town that stood out from them all, it was certainly Gordes. Driving into the town, the view opened up to the town jetted out on top of a mountain. I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was, the views over the valley were magical. Around the corner was the Sénanque Abbey, a lovely afternoon spent in historic grounds.

3. Avignon
The larger of the hilltop towns, nestled next to the Rhone River, Avignon has a historic edge to it. A visit to the Palais des Palpes is worth it, and be sure to walk around to explore town.

4. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
This is where we stayed while in Provence. The Wednesday farmer’s market is incredible, and loved getting to explore this small town.

5. Sault
We headed out here on a whim in pursuit of the lavender fields, and ended up loving this area. As you descend into the valley, you immediately smell the lavender. The town is small, but the drive was the most scenic during the trip.

6. Roussillon
The red-town, this one was one of the unique spots while in Provence. Located in the Luberon, it was a perfect morning stop to explore a bustling hilltop spot.

7. Marseille
It seems that all roads lead to Marseille, so eventually you should stop by. It’s a great afternoon as there’s much to see and the cool sea breeze will help cool you off.
