A Day Driving in the Luberon

One place that I was especially excited to visit while staying in Provence, was the Luberon. A region in France famed for lavender fields, perched hilltop towns, and local markets, I could not wait to visit.

Taking a day to visit the region by car, we started the road trip in Oppède. We arrived to the small town and took in the view across the town. Eager to move onto the highlights of Roussillon and Gordes, we continued on.

A short drive brought us to the red and orange walls of Roussillon. Winding up the streets, it was hard not to love the contrast of this town, unlike anywhere else in Provence. Grabbing a cold ice cream, we explored the church at the top of the hill, took in the view and continued on our way.

Gordes was up next, and it was the place I was most excited about. It did not disappoint. Perched over the valley, it was the most magical place I had seen. The cobblestone streets paired with the sweet air of nearby orchards felt like you were in a different world. We stopped in at La Bastide de Gordes to enjoy a cup of afternoon tea before making our way to the next stop.

Sénanque Abbey was our next stop during our day of driving in the Luberon. Only fifteen minutes from Gordes, we descended into the valley to this iconic spot. The lavender was a bit late in season, but none the less, touring the abbey was wonderful.

We had caught wind that in the north, near Sault, the lavendar was the still blooming. On a whim, we hopped in the car to chase sunset in the fields. It was one of those chances we had no idea if it was going to pan out, but at the end of the day, it was perfect. We ate a wonderful restaurant in Sault called Le Petit Jardin. Afterwards we made our way down to the fields to catch a glimpse of the sun setting over the valley. What a magical day in the Luberon it was!
